COMME UNE IMAGE
LOOK AT ME is an effortlessly entertaining tale of an egotistical writer and the daughter who craves his attention. Premiering as an Official Selection at Cannes in 2004 (where it was awarded Best Screenplay), LOOK AT ME is Jaoui's second feature, following the award-winning THE TASTE OF OTHERS.
Lolita (Marilou Berry) is a plump young singer of 20 whose father is the famous writer and publisher Etienne Cassard (co-writer Bacri). Lolita, struggling with her own self-image, feels like a stepping-stone for people to get close to him. Cassard, for his part, is too self-involved to pay any attention to Lolita, or for that matter, to his rather sweet wife, Karine (Virginie Desarnauts). His odiousness isn't a career impediment in Paris power circles - he's so influential that people want to know him wherever he goes! For instance, Lolita's teacher at the conservatory (Jaoui) suddenly pays her keener attention when she learns who her father is - as her own husband is a struggling novelist...
LOOK AT ME is an insightful and very clever portrait of how proximity to fame or sudden success changes the balance of power in relationships, and how beauty is achieved and perceived. The punchy and often deadpan dialogue makes for a resounding sense of comic melancholy - touching, sharp and close to the bone - and the delightfully drawn characters are beautifully rendered by the talented ensemble cast.
